How to Paint on a Buttercream Cake

Painting on a buttercream cake is a delightful way to elevate your cake decorating skills and turn your cake into a work of art. This technique allows you to create vibrant, custom designs using edible colors and a bit of creativity. With a smooth layer of buttercream as your canvas, you can paint intricate patterns, beautiful landscapes, or whimsical designs that will not only impress your guests but also add a personal touch to your celebration. Whether you're a seasoned baker or a hobbyist looking to explore new techniques, painting on buttercream opens up a world of artistic possibilities that can transform any cake into a stunning centerpiece.

1. Start with a Chilled Cake. Buttercream should be firm to create a sturdy canvas. *Use Real Butter*

2. Use an American style Buttercream or a crusting buttercream so the food coloring will absorb easier. Click here for the recipe: American Buttercream for Painting

You will need Vodka or you can use Almond or Lemon Extract, your choice of Gel Food Coloring, a mixing bowl, & a paint brush.

3. Use Gel Food Coloring and mix with a bit of Vodka. You can also use Almond or Lemon Extract. This will thin out the gel & allow the food coloring to dry quickly. *Vodka completely evaporates and will not intoxicate*

4. Begin painting the design on the chilled cake with a paint brush. Make sure to start light so the food coloring does not drip down the cake ruining your design.

And that's it! You've painted on a Buttercream Cake! 💜 Make sure to keep the cake cool and in low humidity to prevent the cake from sweating! Enjoy more Tutorials & Recipes here!
