5 Ways to Make Your Cakes Look More Professional

Creating a cake that not only tastes divine but also looks impeccably professional involves more than just baking skills. From mastering smooth, even frosting to achieving flawless decoration, every detail contributes to a cake's visual appeal. This guide will walk you through essential techniques to enhance your cake decorating game, including tips on achieving a pristine finish, incorporating elegant designs, and presenting your cake in a way that impresses. Whether you're preparing for a special occasion or simply aiming to refine your baking craft, these professional touches will ensure your cakes look as extraordinary as they taste.

1. Having a nicely decorated Cake Board finishes the Cake off with a nice professional touch! You can use gold or silver foil wrap, gold cake boards or pre decorated cake board, or my favorite! using fondant with a textured design, using impression mats and a ribbon personalizes the finished look! The point is to match the cake board with the design of the cake. This will elevate your cake, taking it to the next level and making the cake POP!

2. Working with Frozen or Well Chilled Cakes allows for you to handle the cake without messing up the design. Especially if you are stacking cakes (My recommendation is to Chill). While frosting the cake, smooth out top first then smooth out the sides and chill the cake for at least 20-30 minutes. After chilling, use a sharp bench scraper, spatula, or knife to remove excess buttercream and make sharp edges. This works best if your buttercream uses real butter and not margarine. You can find some recipes here: Buttercream Recipes

3. Working with fondant can get a little messy. Powdered sugar gets all over but it’s necessary to keep the fondant from sticking. Use a large, soft paint brush to brush off excess sugar.  Instead of steaming or brushing with water, brushing the powdered sugar off will give it a smooth even toned look. This gives it a matte finish which will also help with humidity. Also check out: 5 Tips for Working with Marshmallow Fondant

4. Pay attention to the details. The smallest of details can make a difference. Try to evenly space items and make sure buttercream designs stay in place. Clean up any messes. Take the extra time to be a bit OCD, trust me, this will pay off in the end. Customers will comment on perfectionism and will see your professionalism!

5. Add Professional Info Cards such as Cake Care Card, Allergy Card and of course your Business Card. Instead of presenting the cake in a plain box to your customers, maybe even adding your business card and a thank you note, take it a step further and add a more professional looking info card! This Cake Care Card is a must! This makes sure you don’t leave anything left unsaid and the customer has the info they need to have a great experience working with your company! I have created some templates for you to customize your own info cards. You can change the colors to match your brand, add your logo, and insert your contact information & QR Code.
