🥜 Ingredients
-
1# unsalted butter, softened
-
2# powdered sugar, sifted
-
1 tsp pure vanilla extract (optional)
-
Pinch of salt (optional, especially if your peanut butter is already salted)
1 cup creamy peanut butter (preferably no-stir) (add as-needed-- more or less)
1-2 Tbsp heavy cream or milk
🧁 Instructions
-
Beat the butter
In a large bowl, use a hand or stand mixer with a paddle attachment to beat the butter on medium-high speed until smooth, and creamy (about 2-3 minutes). Add powdered sugar
Reduce speed to low and gradually add in 2# of powdered sugar (sifted), mixing until incorporated. Scrape down the sides of the bowl as needed.-
Add vanilla & salt
Add vanilla extract and salt. Beat on high for 2-3 minutes until the frosting is light and fluffy. (This is optional as I like a strong peanut butter flavor, but will use this to have regular vanilla buttercream as well) Add peanut butter
Add about 1 cup peanut butter. Beat on high for 2-3 minutes until the frosting is light and fluffy. (I normally don't measure, I add until I like the flavor)Taste and balance
Taste your buttercream. If it’s too thick, add cream/milk 1 tablespoon at a time.-
Frost & enjoy!
Use immediately or store in an airtight container in the fridge or room temperature for up to 5 days. Let it come to room temperature and re-whip before using if chilled.
💡 Tips for Perfect Peanut Butter Buttercream
-
Use a no-stir peanut butter (like Skippy or Jif) for best texture. Natural peanut butter can separate and make the frosting oily or gritty.
-
Sift your powdered sugar to avoid lumps and get a smooth finish.
-
Make it chocolatey by adding 1/4 cup of cocoa powder—hello, chocolate peanut butter frosting!
🎂 Best Ways to Use It
-
Chocolate cupcakes with a peanut butter swirl
-
Banana bread layer cake
-
Sandwich between cookies or macarons
-
Pipe onto brownies or blondies
-
Slather on toast for an indulgent breakfast (yes, we went there!)
